Default "give it a spin"

In these days of "the recession" people look for ways to spend less and still enjoying little rest and relaxation. This will be an ongoing thread,I hope,as I have time or other readers have time to share their favoirte music/performers/artists.

CD sales are down, so is iTunes but another way to enjoy music without much cost is by heading out to your local library. Last year the public library systems saw an increase in use. I have always
enjoyed visiting my library and this year (2009) I will enjoy it more than ever.

I recently stopped by the Appleton Public Library and picked up a few cd's to enjoy.

The Who has always been one of my favorite bands. I have an extensive library of their music but I found this great old cd at the library, "Live at Leeds", This has all the original members on it,making it even better in my mind.

Recorded at Leeds University 2/14/1970 makes this event and recording almost 39 years ago!!

From the great guitar riffs by Pete townsend to great vocals by Roger Daltry with the back beat by Keith Moon and John Entwistle this is a pure treasure. Give it a spin and you too will enjoy the Who
the way they used to be.

The Who Live at Leeds Catalog number MCAD-11215

1. Heaven And Hell 4:50
2. I Can't Explain 2:58
3. Fortune Teller 2:34
4. Tattoo 3:42
5. Young Man Blues 5:52
6. Substitute 2:07
7. Happy Jack 2:13
8. I'm A Boy 4:42
9. A Quick One, While He's Away 8:42
10. Amazing Journey / Sparks 7:55
11. Summertime Blues 3:22
12. Shakin' All Over 4:34
13. My Generation 15:47
14. Magic Bus 7:48

"Give it a spin" and let that "Magic bus" take you away

I was hoping by now someone else would jump in and add to this thread that I started. Well here is another from me.Anyone can jump in and make comments or add their own thread.

Audio CD
Title:The Little Willies
Artist(s): The Little Willies
Original Release Date:03/07/2006
Format: Studio
Label: Milking Bull Records
cat#:0946 3 5067 2 5

The nice part of taking cd out of the library is that you can try new or different music without buying it. If you really like it then you can support the musician by purchasing the cd. I grabbed this cd without reading the personel just because the title caught my attention. Later I noticed Norah Jones whom I have heard of but
never heard was listed as part of the personel. On a differnt thread I mentioned anyone who could play guitar as well as Les Paul has earned his chops well, the funny thing is right after I added that thread I popped in this cd, I aquired from the Appleton Public Library and like an "in your face" the very 1st track "Roly Poly" set me straight. Guitarist Jim Campliongo came on like "no tomorrow" and proved his chops.
Background
as taken from Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Willies
The Little Willies is a band formed in 2003 that features Norah Jones on piano and vocals, Richard Julian on vocals, Jim Campilongo on guitar, Lee Alexander on bass, and Dan Rieser on drums.
The group formed around a love of country classics. Between members' regular gigs, they first played at New York City’s Living Room. The show led to a series of events, including a benefit concert for public radio station WFUV. The loose-knit collective found itself with a growing following. The Little Willies’ self-titled debut album has added to their popularity.
Their album features covers of tracks by Hank Williams (I’ll Never Get Out), Willie
Nelson (Gotta Get Drunk and Nightlife), Fred Rose (Roly Poly), Townes Van Zandt (No Place to Fall) and Kris Kristofferson (Best of All Possible Worlds). Fusing cover material with a few of their own original compositions, the band delivers what a review by John Metzger describes as an affable set that occasionally strikes pure
gold.

Track List
Roly Poly (Fred Rose)
I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive (Fred Rose, Hank Williams)
Love Me (Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller)
It's Not You It's Me (Richard Julian, Ashley Monroe)
Best Of All Possible Worlds (Kris Kristofferson)
No Place To Fall (Townes Van Zandt)
Roll On (Lee Alexander)
I Gotta Get Drunk (Willie Nelson)
Streets Of Baltimore (Tompall Glaser, Harland Howard)
Easy As The Rain (Richard Julian, Jim Campilongo)
Tennessee Stud (Jimmy Driftwood)
Night Life (Walter M. Freeland, Paul F. Buskirk, Willie Nelson)
Lou Reed (Lee Alexander, Richard Julian, Norah Jones)

"Give it a spin" and you too will enjoy this cd

Audio CD
Title:Kicking Television
Artist(s):Wilco
Original Release Date: November 15, 2005
Format:Live
Label:Nonesuch Records
ASIN: 79903-2

The first time I ever heard of this group was on a cd with Billy Bragg title Mermaid Ave. I knew very little of this group other than my assumption that they were Billy's back-up band. Mermaid ave was a release of unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics and was an excellent recording but that is for another time.
Kicking Television kicks your butt. Recorded at Chicago's Vic Theater recorded May 4, 2005 to May 7, 2005, the dynamics of this live recording come through extremely well and for all you boomers out there, it demonstrates how a group of young and very talented individuals having the influence of the 60's, can create a modern and appeasing cross-generational sound.
My impression was strong hints of John Lennon backed up by The Band.

"give it a spin" both young and old should enjoy this great work

Audio CD
Title:Lives in the balance
Artist(s): Jackson Browne
Original Release Date: 1986
Format: studio
Label: Asylum
ASIN: 9 60457-2

Music with a purpose has always caught my atention and "Lives in the balance" is no exception to that rule as it contains as much entertaining value as it contains messages. Messages we can relate to even today ,23 years after it was first released. The Genre' blending release is amazing and deserves "a spin".
Go out and get it and "give it a spin"

a sideline note
Jackson Browne has participated in the "Steel Bridge" gathering in Sturgeon Bay over the past few years. He supports Wisconsin, so why not support him?

from Lives in the balance

"Ive been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that youve seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war"
Jackson Browne

1. For America
2. Soldier Of Plenty
3. In The Shape Of A Heart
4. Candy
5. Lawless Avenues
6. Lives In The Balance

Title:With a Little Help from My Friends

With a Little Help from My Friends
Original Release Date: April 1969
In Joe Cocker's 1969 debut album "With a Little Help from My Friends" he covers Dylan to the Beatles. He opens with a great Steve Winwood tune and carries all the tracks as if they were his own. He creates the feel of R&B, rockNroll style.
His friends included on this release were some of the best of their times with the likes of Jimmy Page and Stevie Winwood mixing it up to create one of Joe Cocker's all time great releases.

track list

1. Feelin' Alright
2. Bye Bye Blackbird
3. Change In Louise
4. Marjorine
5. Just Like A Woman
6. Do I Still Figure In Your Life?
7. Sandpaper Cadillac
8. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
9. With A Little Help From My Friends
10. I Shall Be Released
11. The New Age Of Lily
12. Something's Coming On

It is difficult to believe that this release is 40 years old!!
So recall the past or listen for the the first time but "Give it a spin"
and you too will be impressed.

Audio CD Freedom
Title:Freedom
Artist(s): Neil Young
Original Release Date: October 3, 1989
Format: studio
Label: Reprise
ASIN: 9 25899-2

from finding dulcinea (Librarian of the internet)
On Nov. 9, 1989, jubilant East and West Berliners began tearing down the Berlin Wall, a symbol of the Iron Curtain for 28 years.

On this Day: The Berlin Wall Comes Down

Now was it a coincedence or what, that the free world enlarged after the Neil Young release of Freedom? Did Neil's release inspire all to "Keep on rockin in the free world"?
I am sure it was coincidence but it sounds more thought provoking the other way.

Freedom an album with a message as good today as it was 20 years ago when first released. Neil Young looks at the many facets of Freedom.
I feel it is one of his finest releases, from awesome acoustic guitar to gut wrenching electric in his style . Neil Young makes you want to "keep rockin in the free world"

What is your "Freeddom"?

"give it a spin" and keep rockin'

6. Do You Like the Way

Watch the master plan, the pastures span
Through the streets, move the sheep
Flipped the beat, like the shepherd
It’s a new day, my crew stay forever striving
Give thanks cause we alive, and been through the gutter
Now we see the horizon
It’s clear to me now
Used to be confused, took a lot of years to see how
Now, we moving planets
Take the average mind and expand it
You take for granted like we’re always gonna be disadvantaged
But soon come, it soon come, ya soon done
Ya start run, you stumble, we catch one
In the rhythm, Santana lick the guits with precision
Not accidental, intentional conscious decision
To Zion, we’re marching through with African Mayans
Conquering Babylon with the heart of a lion
And the walls of Jericho come a-tumbling down
Tell me, how long has it been
Is everything, everything alright my friend
You see, time is passing, people asking how come none of this ain’t lasting
Money will make people deal like they don’t even have to feel
But no, it ain’t real, it ain’t real
Oh, do you like the way that it’s going down
Do you like the way that it’s going down
Ooh, do you like the way
How long, how long will we wait, to sit down and communicate
See, everything is relative, if you want to get then give
Can’t we all just build and live, can’t we, can’t we?
Do you like the way that it’s going down
Do you like the way that it’s going down
Do you like the way that it’s going down
Do you like the way that it’s going down
