it's a million years ago , my friends and myself would go every chance we had to see Appleton's famous Soup.
I recently brought out my cassette copy I made from the original vinyl. a plain brown lp cover with a mimeographed single sheet insert and a non-labeled LP. This LP was sold mainly in what they called "Head shops" for the high price of $3.00!
So I went back into the stone ages and gave it a few listens. Doug Yankus could play that guitar like no other in the Fox river valley. He was soooooooooooooooooooo good it was amazing. Read his story sad and true below. Looking back and knowing how well he played you just have to wonder if his talent did not get him very far, how many other talented musicians have gone the way of oblivion?
Listening to the tape brought back memories of basement coffee houses packed with teens, all wannabes bouncing their heads in rhythm with hot licks coming off his Gold Les Paul or SG special. I think about that and laugh, we must have been a spectacle to see. But if anyone rocked in Appleton it was Doug Yankus!
The Irony is that from my memory his first record 45 rpm was in a band called Private Property and the song title was "Destination nowhere".
Does anyone have that digitized?
