Another difficult choice:

Roy Orbison's Crying:

and the kd lang/Orbison cover:

Not everyone's cup of tea these days, I grew up on Roy Orbison records as a kid and probably know every song by heart.. gotta say the remake/cover by Orbison and kd lang edge out the original just slightly because I'm also a big kd lang fan!

Just to mention one last one as you all mentioned Dylan and Hendrix and I'll stick in Neil Young again for good measure)..

Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower

Jimi Hendrix: All Along The Watchtower Live! Isle Of Wight 1970

Neil Young - All Along the Watchtower

I actually prefer Dylan's studio version of the song. His version here is very likeable tho and I think he owns the song for what it's worth.

I really never liked Jimi much live.. I almost always preferred his studio versions but he'll always be remembered for songs like Purple Haze and All Along The Watchtower nonetheless.

Neil Young.. always adds his own flavor whether it's rock or acoustic. I'd have to say if you already like Neil, you can appreciate this version even tho you may not prefer it to the original.

Dylan FTW!

I watched a little of Neils Version and he is good with his distinct guitar sound but it is just a similar copy to Jimi Hendrix who transformed the song to rock.
Bob's is my fav but Jimi makes it explode.
I actually wrote a version of this one but never recorded it. It's ofcourse acoustic but rename cobol blues, after spending 12 hours writting a cobol program I was listening to Rattle and hum by U2 who also do a great rock version, Bono inspired me do the re-write.
Perhaps I will record it someday.

How about Like A Hurricane by Neil Young vs the cover by Roxy Music?

Or Across the Universe by the Beatles vs the cover by Rufus Wainwright?
