MySpace Music: Over 1 Billion Songs Streamed In One Month - WisMusic

Since MySpace Music launched Sept. 24th, they've reported streaming in excess of 1 billion songs to date! That's a phenomenal rate of success for this new music service. By contrast, the popular iTunes service took 5 years to hit the 5 billion mark.

"We can confirm that we hit a milestone of one billion music streams only a few days after launching the new product," the company said in a statement, and a MySpace PR representative clarified to CNET News that the number only includes songs streamed since MySpace Music's debut. "More importantly, we are still compiling our metrics on engagement and unique users which will tell a much richer story on how positively the community is responding to the new music experience. We're excited to share more information and data as soon as it's available."

Wow! That's a lot of music streams.

Streams are one thing. Apple actually sold 5 billion songs. Much if not most of what is on myspace is free, though I saw local milwaukee music institution Steve Cohen has a dozen tunes for sale on his page there, besides at least 5 free tunes.

iTunes deserves credit for making the business model. Social networking sites can capitalize on that. How long till your friends see what you bought, to spur on their consumerism. It's already happened.

I think music streams are the wave of the future in many respects. One billion streams is admirable if for nothing else than the enormous traffic it generated to the MySpace community. Traffic translates into revenue in a variety of ways. People who might not buy a song can still generate revenue for a site by clicking an ad while visiting and viewing a music stream. And for that matter, clicks aren't even needed.. advertisers on those pages streaming music are paying for the exposure. I think MySpace has made a dynamite move.
